Charles Alderton made history in 1885 when he created the first batch of Dr Pepper in Waco, Texas and cooks everywhere have been combining the flavor of Dr Pepper with barbecue and sides such as baked beans.
How did Dr Pepper get it’s name?
According to the Dr Pepper website, Alderton worked at a drugstore in Waco, Texas, owned by Wade Morrison. Legend has it that Morrison named it “Dr. Pepper” after the father of a young girl he was once in love with.
Now, onto the beans…
I’m keeping it simple using these canned vegetarian baked beans. Super easy to find in any grocery store.
Add diced white onion to the beans.
Brown sugar is added next.
Along with ketchup for that tangy component of our beans.
I am using original Dr Pepper, but there are many different versions at stores like Whole Foods.
Add the fizzy soda to the beans.
Give everything a good stir and place into an 8″ square baking pan.
Traditionally, bacon is used in these beans but since we’re keeping it vegetarian, consider adding soy-based Bac’n Bits. You could also choose to omit this step all together.
Bake at 375 degrees until thick and bubbly. It will continue to thicken as it cools slightly.
